Melanie Frances Sponselee also know as “Melly Frances” is a singer songwriter who grew up in Houston Texas and in 1996 moved to San Diego CA. Her music is energetic. Strongly influenced by the landscapes of her youth, it reflects her southern roots as well as a taste for mexi-cali folktales and horseback adventures. In Summer of 2008 She bought an acoustic guitar and started writing and recording her own music. She applies a style of story telling found in early folk and blues musicians such as Guitar Slim, Bessie Smith and Otis Redding to the more modern styles of Ray Lamontagne, Neko Case, and even The Black Keys. Melly’s vocal style is an inspired mixture reminiscent of early jazz and blues singers like Billy Holiday, Nina Simone and Etta James. She currently sings and songwrites in the four piece band “Melly Frances & The Curls” Accompanying her are some of San Diego’s most talented musicians including upright bass player Darren Wagner, guitarist Matthew Tucker and percussionist Timothy O’neill. The 4 pieces band richly infuses blues, folk, and rock & roll in a fashion that is not only authentic but truly captivating. They can be found the first Tuesday of each month at the Tin Can Ale House located in Banker’s Hill.
