San Diego LGBT Weekly features our new Greenroom Writers Workshop

Writing, reading, sharing our stories

by Andrew Printer

Back in the dark ages of the 1970s and 1980s when I was plump, young and oh-so serious I used to journal a lot, put onto paper all the dark and exhilarating things I was feeling. I used to read a lot too, relishing new literary discoveries by the likes of Christopher Isherwood, Paul Monette and Dorothy Allison. No matter where I lived, paperback books and spiral-bound notebooks were stacked everywhere. I still have them all.

GreenRoom Writing Workshop: Scapegoats

We all know (or have been) that poor schmuck who takes the blame and puts up with the harassment for no other reason then the crowd says he has to. Let’s talk and write about those times when one person has to be the fall guy.

(Optional viewing: this GreenRoom was partially inspired by the amazing documentary “Catching Hell”, part of ESPN’s “30 For 30″ series. It’s on Netflix, runs about an hour, and is awesome.)

This GreenRoom Writing Workshop will be a primer to help generate ideas for our October VAMP showcase “Mob Rules”.

The Borg. Cults. Board meetings.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. You said yes. And then suddenly, there was kool-aid being passed around and you thought, “Wait a minute…”

Whether you were talked into it or realized it was happening too late, let’s explore what happens when you realize the hive mind isn’t as smart as you thought it was.

This GreenRoom Writing Workshop will be a primer to help generate ideas for our October VAMP showcase “Mob Rules”.

Plans are being made. Flights are being bought. The stores have been decked out in holiday cheer since September…

The holidays are upon us again! For some people this is cause for legitimate celebration. Others anxiously look for excuses to avoid as much of it as possible.

In this GreenRoom we’ll talk about what the holidays mean to each of us. Which parts we enjoy and which parts we dread. And most importantly, how do we write about it?

This workshop be a primer to our upcoming special showcase ‘Home for the Holiday vol.IV’

GreenRoom Writing Workshop @ Space 4 Art: “The Food We Eat”

GreenRoom

Who knew something so simple as eating would turn into such a dilemma for us as adults? Some of us eat too much. Some eat not enough. Some think this is perfectly alright. Some of us lose sleep over it.

Join us to discuss our thoughts and ideas around the centerpiece of the holiday fun, the dinner table and all the food on it. And, of course, how to write about it.

This GreenRoom will be a primer for our January VAMP showcase “Are You Gonna Eat That”.

Greenroom Writers Workshop: “History Repeating”

February’s free writers workshop focuses on the phenomenon of history coming back to haunt us. Are you watching in horror as you become your parents? Are you struck by a sense of deja vu? Are you fascinated or obsessed with recurring themes in your life? Well then this is the writing session for you. All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again, but only on Thursday Feb 2nd will we be writing about it. Come for in-class generative writing and discussion or bring in a piece on theme to have us workshop with you.
