Animal lovers, unite. VAMP is June 30th!

Do you love animals? And do you love stories? We have the purrfect show for you. VAMP: Animal Control is Thursday, June 30th at 8:30 PM at the Whistle Stop Bar. Come hear some fine creative non-fiction stories about the animals in our performer’s lives. VAMP is So Say We All’s monthly curated storytelling showcase, and we tell you stories each month at The Whistle Stop Bar in South Park. Our writers are chosen from a competitive field of blind submissions, and put through a grueling editing and coaching process.

VAMP: Animal Control is a night of stories about critters. They’re our best friends and our most frightening nightmares. We share this planet with many creatures and even though they don’t know how to build skyscrapers or develop smartphone apps, animals still very much shape our reality in many (sometimes ridiculous) ways. Also, they can be such murderous beasts.

We’ll feature stories about cats, dogs, lab mice, bears, snakes, rats, lizards, gerbils, and… a few surprises. Come hear some tail tales (lol) about the non-humans in our life. The animal show is always a doozy.

VAMP: Sports! is Thursday March 24th

Some of us are better at sporting than others. Some of us are better at watching other people doing their sporting. And there’s just something vaguely naughty about dressing up in shiny, tight costumes and peacocking around for televised national enjoyment. Sports!

Come listen to stories about athletics going well for us and, of course, the times when our feats of supposed strength didn’t go so well.

**Note: March has 5 Thursdays this year, so this happens to not be the last Thursday of the month. Mark your calendars! Tell your friends!**

Attention Educators! Teaching storytelling?

Are you an educator interested in teaching storytelling or personal narrative writing, or are you looking to enrich your current curriculum with models of storytelling and live performance?

We’d like to invite you to some upcoming all-ages (though we cannot promise squeaky clean language!) performances through our partnerships with community colleges throughout San Diego. These are great opportunities to come and see live storytelling yourself, bring your teaching colleagues, and/or bring your students and classes!

The students participating in these showcases were selected from large fields of student submissions, and then spent a month working intensively with faculty, So Say We All teaching artists, and their co-performers to bring their stories to the stage. They work so hard, and have such amazing stories to tell.

If you are interested in having So Say We All work with you at your school or college, get in touch with us.

Here are our three community college shows:

Long Story Short: Balls, Saturday 2/20

Long Story Short is our monthly improv storytelling night. 5 minute stories, no notes, and anyone can take the stage. “Balls!” is technically our tie-in with the next month’s VAMP: Sports! but we’re pretty sure you might have some, um, non-sports related stories for this theme. Balls, tell us all about ’em.

Sign up when you get there. Or halfway through the show. Or just come to listen!

So Say We All’s Long Story Short
Saturday, February 20th
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The Ink Spot
San Diego Writers, Ink
2730 Historic Decatur Rd #202
(NTC at Liberty Station, Barracks 16, upstairs)
San Diego, CA 92106
(619) 696-0363

This is an excellent opportunity to get your storytelling feet wet in a fun environment. It’s also an opportunity to flesh out a potential VAMP story on a similar theme to the upcoming submission deadline. The deadline for written story submissions for VAMP: Sports is Sunday, 2/28. So come tell your story, see how it rolls [lol sports analogy, we win], and maybe write it up and try out [lol sports] for VAMP?

Because balls.

And, if you love VAMP, please consider donating as a part of our annual year-end fundraiser. So Say We All could not exist without your help, in both financial support and your tireless support as an audience member, a volunteer, an advocate (i.e. that person who tells her coworkers the next day about the killer storytelling thing they missed) or as a performer yourself.

We are here to help you tell your stories, and to help you tell them well. Throughout 2016, we’ll have many opportunities to help you develop your stories. The month before each theme’s submission deadline, there’ll be a Greenroom writing workshop catering to the theme, where you can start writing your story, as well as a Long Story Short with a complementary theme, where you can test the waters and try out a portion of your story.

We love you, and we can’t wait to see you at these shows and, better yet, hear your stories. Write us a little something. Tell us a story, won’t you?

High Tech High Chula Vista project: final week of shows!

Just three shows remain for “The Power Within,” our education partnership with 11th graders at High Tech High Chula Vista. Come hear some stories!

The two shows last week featured incredible writing, brave and powerful storytelling, lots of laughter, lots of tears, and lots of pride. We are so proud of the intense amount of work and courage put into these stories. Come see! Three more nights!

Also featured at each show are pieces of art the students created to illustrate where their power comes from, using elements of biology. The art is incredibly powerful.

VAMP: 4 AM

Sleeplessness. Quiet. Or maybe not quiet: maybe there’s something going bump in the night. The night is for the seedy, the shameful, the surreptitious, but also the sweet, the let-me-just-stay-ten-more-minutes, and the [redacted]. And that magical time just before the sky starts to lighten, when the bars are closed, the air is chilled, and there’s no hope for getting any sleep.

Join us for an evening of stories about the things we do beneath the cloak of night. The things we do when we can’t sleep.

September Artist Spotlight: $unny Katz

We couldn’t be happier to have MS Paint maestro $unny Katz illustrate our September VAMP poster: The Games We Play. Yep, you heard us: MS Paint.

A little about yourself:

My name is $unny Katz, I am 27 years of age and I really hate writing bios. My interests include, but are not limited to, anime, video games, babes, babes that buy me things, and glitter. My non interests include, but are definitely not limited to, fuckery, people that grab at my tattoos, dry skin, loud chewing, and close talkers. I prefer to lurk in the shadows and under the cover of night. This is because the day star is hot and burns my delicate skin. The irony that I am named after the object I try to avoid is not lost on me. I have a lot of cats and I am always ready to swap cat tails. (LOL, GET IT????)

What’s your fascination/history with MS Paint?

I started playing around with MS paint around ten years ago. I don’t remember what I drew, but I am guessing it was probably something with bunnies and dicks. In my twenties I started using it at a more frequent and consistent rate. I really liked how it made whatever I was drawing a little bit shitty. I myself being a little bit shitty immediately identified with that property. Most of my drawings are things that I have done for my own enjoyment and for the horror everyone else. Which in turn brings me yet more enjoyment.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever painted?

Hands down MS painting my father as a Jewish rapper was the greatest achievement of my artistic career.

What kind of inspiration did you use for “The Games We Play”?

THE BLOOD OF NEWBORN CHILDREN. Oh, sorry! Wrong questionnaire. I pulled inspiration only from my own gaming background. I thought about trying to incorporate other games that might interest people outside of my own person, but then I realized how much I didn’t want to do that.

Signed, limited edition prints of $unny’s poster will be for sale at this month’s VAMP on September 29. Also, check out her blog and let her know she does amazing work.
